As massive protests have continued to trail the Senate’s passage of a resolution to retain the provision of Section 29 (4) (b) of the 1999 Constitution. Under the section, a married underage girl is deemed to be an adult; and Nollywood Actress Stella Damasus has joined the fight.
Today on a video message she sent out, she has clearly said her mind about the issue and also described the First Lady silence on the issue of child slavery as a ‘big shame’. According to her, “First lady goes about dealing with issues that do not concern her instead of facing the problem that is important.”
Stella is really furious! A must watch!

The Law:
Section 29 (1) of the 1999 Constitution states: “Any citizen of Nigeria of full age who wishes to renounce his Nigerian citizenship shall make a declaration in the prescribed manner for the renunciation.”
Sub-section (4a) states: “Full age means the age of 18 years and above”, while (4b) says: “Any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.”
The new amendment says that a married underage girl is now deemed to be a full adult in the country. This has led to widespread protest world-wide from those who are concerned about the way the law promotes child abuse. Petitions are circulating and even those who’ve moved away from Nigeria are using social media as a way to express their outrage.

@Stella, instead for u to go National Assembly and express ur anger, First Lady na ur mate? When did First Lady became a lawmaker? Or is ur assumption? You better trade carefully. Child marriage is the law proposed by Senate, how does that concern First Lady, try to hit on the head and stop bringing sentiment into important issue like this. Mtchw
