Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu is finally open with the commencement of flight operations by the Ethiopian Airlines today. Businessmen and other travelers from all the states of the South East, Edo and Delta now have the option of making their international travels through Enugu, rather than far away Lagos and Abuja airports as has previously been the case.
Speaking on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan, the SGF said “this is a promise kept”.
“Remember, many promises have been given on this airport by many administrations, but when President Jonathan came, he promised and today he has delivered. It is a dream come through for the people of south east”.
Also in a remark, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah expressed appreciation to President Jonathan for fulfilling his promise to the people of South-East region.
She disclosed that already seven foreign airlines have indicated their interest to commence flight operations at the airport.
In a remark, Chairman of the South-East Governors’ forum and Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi said upgrading of the airport to an international status would definitely boost the economy of Enugu state and entire South-East zone.
It was recorded that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu was designed and built by former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme at the age of 26, adding that it is historical that his vision of many years ago is now being fulfilled.
One Enugu businessman, Mr Cardinal who travelled through Enugu International Airport today to India told Diamond Celebrities ” he is so happy as he doesn’t have to travel to Lagos to take flight to India anymore.”
