The man who led the fight to end the system of apartheid here and then went on to lead the country itself died at the age of 95 years, Thursday, 5th December,
Tributes flow in from across the globe as South Africa and the rest of the world mourns the loss of anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.
Nigerian born Hollywood Model/ Author Eeefy Ify Ike:
Nelson Mandela sleeps peacefully at 95.
Death echoes in the world.
The exit of Africa’s greatest warrior.
The best leader the world ever produced.
The most superior of souls.
The hero of heroes.
The strength of the African child.
A phenomenal symbol of peace and dignity.
He was truly an inspiration that displayed the splendour of The Lord.
The one whose strides and presence decrease great men.
It is indeed unfortunate but the inevitable death must visit at some point.
Your legacy shall be celebrated forever!!!
Superior souls transcend death!
Mandiba lives on!!!
Can Nigeria produce such superior leader??? I’m weeping for the youths of our nation! We are plunging further into oblivion.
Nollywood Director, Obi Emelonye:
As a green-eyed 19 year old, I studied Nelson Mandela as part of my Character Analysis class in my first year at university. At the time he was still in prison under apartheid. I could’t help but admire the courage and saintly altruism of a man who, instead of defending himself when faced with the prospect of life imprisonment, had this to say:
“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
He lived for that ideal and, against the odds, achieved it in his lifetime. Yesterday, he watered that ideal with his own blood as he passed triumphantly into immortality. A bright light was turned off yesterday, plunging our world into darkness. If we can all borrow little leaves from the giant tree that was…that is Nelson Mandela, then this world would be a better place.
Comrade Thabo Mbeki could not have put it more profoundly:
“You have borne the pain of those who have known fear and learnt to conquer it.
You have marched in front when comfort was in the midst of the ranks
You have laughed to contend against a river of tears.
You have cried to broadcast a story of joy…
The accident of your birth should have condemned you to a village.
Circumstances you did not choose should have confined you to a district.
Your sight, your heart and your mind could have reached no further than the horizon of the natural eye.
But you have been where you should not have been.
You have faced death and said – do your worst!
You have inhabited the dark, dark dungeons of freedom denied, itself a denial to live in a society where freedom was denied.”
Rest in peace Madiba.
