In a search and rescue operation by the emergency rescue agency, which is still ongoing, 13 dead bodies have been recovered at the scene of the boat capsize which took place on Tuesday night by 11:30pm when a boat carrying about 15 passengers capsized opposite 41 road Festac town, Lagos.

According to a NEMA source, it was learnt that a distress call was made to the Nigerian Navy and the National Emergency Management Agency, asking for rescue. The boat which was carrying passengers across to the other side of Festac, a short distance journey that ordinarily a bridge should have been used to link the distance for passengers to cross over safely.

A resident of the area who spoke under conditions of anonymity lamented the loss of lives and blamed it on the local government of the area that refused to construct the bridge but instead gave room for boat riders that operate on the river for a token of N20 to carry a passenger across.

A woman lost three of her children who all drowned before her very eyes, before help could come since it was night. Tell me how you can comfort that woman,’ he asked tearfully. So far only 13 bodies have been recovered while the search and rescue operation continues.
