“I Am Happy It Happened”- Basket Mouth

Popular stand-up comedian Basket Mouth has exclusively revealed to HHWM his thoughts on the backlash he received from his infamous rape joke he posted on his Facebook account.

“Life is like that. We all make mistakes” said Basket Mouth. “If you read that joke again, if you remove emotions from it, you will understand. I wasn’t celebrating it (rape). It wasn’t a celebration of the idea of rape. It was just a joke. Comedians crack jokes about everything, imbeciles…trust me these are emotional topics…We crack jokes about poor people, trust me it is not really funny when you can’t provide food for your children. So every joke has a negative heat on it. It was just that particular topic” he further said on the way the joke was received by Nigerians.

He however confessed that he was happy the reaction he received from the joke. According to him, he and his fellow comedians now know what is acceptable in the Nigerian society. “Honestly, I am happy it happened. Now, I know, and a lot of comedians now know the boundaries.”

Basket Mouth also observed that because the joke was written and not delivered on stage, the backlash was strong. “If I did it on stage, it wouldn’t have been taken like that, but because it was written it wasn’t delivered with the right tone” he said.

On Sunday, January 5, 2014, Basket Mouth posted a joke about dating which featured a rape punchline. (See joke below)

Joke

After the backlash he received, Basket Mouth went on to apologize. “I have a daughter that I would give my life to protect, a wife that means the world to me, a mother that made me the man that I am and anything that is done for any woman is less than she deserves for the role they play in our lives.  I would never in a thousand lifetimes encourage rape, I broadcasted a joke that many clearly misunderstood and have found offensive and I sincerely apologize, the intention however was to highlight an unfortunate trend and the ridiculously flawed comparison between money & the worth of a woman. So to all women, the ones that make our lives colorful, the ones we owe our lives..literally, our pride, our money choppers, the true stronger vessels, this is me, Bright Onyekwere Okpocha saying, I no dey crase to promote rape? Accept my humble apologies if it was misunderstood, it wasn’t meant that way by a long shot. One love” said Basket Mouth in a statement.

With all the problems in Nigeria, our celebrities cannot use their positions to find a solution through their arts. it has to be women, sex etc. Musicians its not enough to dance like fella. please carry his kind of message too in ur songs. Basket mouth, let your jokes be creative, purposeful and productive next time. we are in very touchy times as a people.

I am glad Nigerians are now standing up to all the rubbish from so called celebrities. If we say we need a social re-engineering for this country to move ahead? it has to start from our values as a people. It’s not just Bright, who is guilty of this, but also most of our Nigerian musicians. No one is creative enough to come up with good lyrics for songs anymore. women are constantly been portrayed as sex figures in songs, and videos by musicians, if its not ukwu today, its booty booty booty, or boobi erh!, or take banana. Politicians are not left out too. the average Nigerian man sees a woman as an object to be exploited in satisfying their sexual needs. I hope this serves as a lesson to all those guilty of these things. it’s Bright today, it might be Wizkid tomorrow.
