A 28-year-old man, Chukwudi Nawkor was on Thursday remanded in prison custody by a Magistrates’ Court in Egor, Benin City, Edo State for allegedly defiling a 2-year-old girl.
The accused is standing trial for a one-count charge of defilement before Chief Magistrate Igho Braimoh.
The Chief Magistrate ordered the accused to be taken into prison custody after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Aburimen Akhere, the prosecutor had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 24, 2014 at No. 13, Egharevba Street, Off Uwelu Road, Benin City.
The prosecutor alleged that the accused had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor, after luring her into his room with the kiddies song he was playing.
Akhere said the girl’s body was messy when she came out from the accused room.
He said the offence was contrary to the provisions of Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Bendel State, also applicable in Edo.
The chief magistrate adjourned the case to June 22, for commencement of trial.
It was gathered that if convicted, the accused would serve life imprisonment.
