As part of the ongoing Bank Verification Numbering (BVN), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in conjunction with commercial banks plan to deploy 10,000 biometric data capture machines across 5,000 bank branches nationwide.
The CBN had enjoined bank customers in Lagos to visit selected branches across the state to enrol and obtain their BVN, as a deadline is soon to be set when those who have not enrolled “shall no longer be able to operate their bank accounts”.
The pilot phase of the BVN, a unique identification number for all bank customers, recorded a slow start last month, with the deployment of the machines to about 1,000 bank branches in Lagos.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), to date over 16,000 BVNs have been issued.
