Mother watched teenager drown before realising it was her son

A heartbroken mother has spoken of her devastation after witnessing a teenager drown in a reservoir and later finding out it was her son.

Melanie Goodship, 40, was walking her dogs around Lake Burwain in Colne, Lancashire, when she saw a group of teenagers fighting to keep control of a makeshift raft that had drifted away from the shore.

And although the civil servant rushed to their aid, she didn’t know her son James had already slipped under the freezing water because his phone was ringing when she tried to call him.

‘We saw all the commotion but not for one minute did we know it might be James until we saw a couple of his friends,’ she said, speaking at the inquest.

”I was trying to phone James but there was no answer but I was thinking it’s ringing so he can’t be in the water.

‘But what we didn’t know is his phone had been left on the side.’

The 17-year-old was found in the reservoir the following morning.
