Teen hanged herself because she feared telling Christian parents she might be gay

A Christian teenager took her own life over fears about revealing her sexuality to her parents, an inquest heard.

Lizzie Lowe, 14, had confided in friends about possibly being a lesbian.

However, she was unable to reconcile her sexuality with her family’s Christian faith.

One friend told the inquest ‘she said she wasn’t sure if they (her parents) would be okay with it’.

Lizzie was found hanged in Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury on September 10, after a friend told her mother about a text she received from Lizzie which ended ‘stay strong. I am sorry.’

Friends told the coroner that they too had discussed self-harm and suicide with Lizzie, but Det Insp David Turner, who was overseeing the investigation, told the inquest he had ruled out any ‘suicide pact’.

Speaking to the inquest, Lizzie’s father Ken said her sexuality ‘wouldn’t have come as much surprise’.

‘We would have been very supportive,’ he added.
