The first woman bishop in the history of the Church of England was today officially consecrated. The Reverend Libby Lane became the Bishop of Stockport in a service conducted by the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu.

The historic event was briefly interrupted by the appearance of an ultra-conservative priest shouting ‘Not in the Bible’ as she was presented to the congregation.
The appointment of first woman bishop Rev Libby Lane continues to divide opinion.
But her colleagues say the 48-year-old mother-of-two can handle it – just like she did when she became one of the first women priests 21 years ago.

Rev Libby Lane gave a thumbs up today as she was ordained the Church of England’s first woman bishop.
