You can’t mention people who love their root without mentioning Nollywood Director Ugezu J Ugezu (Ayaka Enugu-Ukwu). After posting this family picture on Facebook, the talented director talked about his love for his root:
“Even as a Primary School Pupil, I was already conscious of my roots and very proud of my Igbo origin. Look at the photo, even after my mother had adorned me on English suit for the family picture then in 1979, as a nine year old boy, I didn’t forget to wear my traditional Igbo Cap. (Zoom the Photo to see how the young has grown)
I just got this photo this morning from one of my nephews and I remembered immediately how almost everybody insisted I must remove the cap because they saw it as stupid, wearing that traditional cap on suit. I insisted then that I must wear the cap or I will not be part of the session. By the Grace of God, I was allowed to wear the traditional cap on the suit and today if you ask me, I will say that this is the best picture I ever took in my life.
Many people will say that Ugezu is very Igbotic and they believe they have insulted me and they will expect me to get angry. What an irony! I feel great when people say that because I am really very Igbotic. It is just like saying that an Indian man is too Indian, a Chinese man is too Chinese and a French man is too French. If people cannot identify the root of a man by listening to and observing the man, then I readily assert that something crucial is missing in the life of that man.
The truth is that men are nothing without their roots. I am an Igbo Man and I am forever proud of my Igboness.”
