Man “abducted teenager in fake kidnap to make himself a hero – but ended up killing her” (Photos)

Police claim a 21-year-old man set up a fake kidnapping which went badly wrong – resulting in the death of a 15-year-old girl

Kyle Dube told others he set up a fake Facebook profile and planned to abductNichole while wearing a ski mask – then ‘rescue’ her later in a bid to appear heroic, according to US authorities.

But teenager Nichole Cable died of asphyxiation, according to the chief medical examiner in the state of Maine.

Her remains were found in the city of Old Town eight days after she went missing.

Dube, of nearby Orono, is accused of using a fake Facebook profile using the name of another young man to set up a meeting with Ms Cable in May 2013.

However, investigators say the fake kidnapping went awry and the girl died.

His attorneys tried to name his ex-girlfriend as an alternative suspect, but Superior Court Justice Ann Murray denied the request.

Prosecutors said the ex had an alibi.

Dube denies the murder.
