President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday identified backlog of salaries owed to public workers and a shabby economy as a major headache his government will inherit.
He, however, assured that his administration would fix the problems. He urged Nigerians to give him time after assuming power to address the challenges.
Speaking at a meeting with governors and governors-elect of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, Buhari said his government must come up with a unique strategy to surmount the challenges ahead of it.
He said there was no going back on stabilising the economy, fixing the security challenge and rebuilding infrastructure.
The president-elect said: “This time around, to bounce back with the issue, especially with the backlog of salaries which is of immediate concern to individuals and states, I think we should look for a better way to address the issue. We have to think of how to persuade people to give us a chance to organise the economy immediately and get these problems fixed.”
He regretted that despite the quantum of resources that came the way of the country as a result of increased oil revenues, salaries of workers were still being owed.
He pleaded: “For this to be corrected, please give the incoming government a chance.”
The president-elect stressed that security remained his first agenda because without security, there would be no development. He, however, said he would move fast to stabilise the economy.
