A dad turned midwife when he rushed home to find his wife giving birth on the bathroom floor.

Shaun Conway had left for work as a greenkeeper at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club last Sunday morning, leaving his heavily pregnant wife, Hayley, at home.

Within minutes of arriving at work Shaun, 31, took a call from his wife saying she was having pains and thought she might be in labour.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, mum-of-three Hayley, 35, from Kirkby, said: “We have had a few false starts over the last week or so, but Shaun left for work at about 5am and then I woke up and thought, ‘oh, I have a bit of pain’.

“I rang him and he said, ‘can you hang on’ and I said ‘well, not really, no’, but I just took two paracetamol and went back to bed, but then my waters broke.”

Hayley, who was home alone with her one-year-old, Iris, added: “I rang Shaun back and couldn’t get an answer and I phoned the hospital and they said to come in but I couldn’t get there.

“I then rang my dad who has a key so he came running upstairs and I just knew that I had to start pushing. I was terrified and I was thinking about my daughter, Iris, who was in her cot and I just didn’t know what to do.

“My dad was just as cool as a cucumber, though, and he phoned 999 and said the paramedics were on their way.”

Meanwhile, Shaun had picked up Hayley’s frantic text messages and headed home to Tower Hill, where he realised it was up to him to get hands-on.

He said: “It was just something I did without thinking really. I just came upstairs, got changed, washed my hands and got ready for the birth.

“I hadn’t read up on what to do because I had never really thought about having to deal with that situation.

“Once the baby was born, we started cleaning her with the towels, but we didn’t want to cut the cord and just waited a little bit longer for the paramedics to do that.”

As paramedics arrived at the house, they were surprised to see the birth was over and baby Scarlett, weighing 8lbs and 14 ounces had been delivered safely with the help of a proud dad.
