A 3-year-old Michigan boy is dead after he got a hold of a loaded gun in a home closet Sunday and shot himself in his head, police said.
Jonathan Kaufman is believed to have been alone in his family’s Lenawee County home, about 25 miles north of Detroit, when he found the 40-caliber handgun, state police said.
The redheaded boy managed to fire a single bullet, killing him at the scene.
The toddler’s father and older brother were outside when the tragedy occurred. Within minutes authorities say police were at the scene.
An investigation by Michigan State Police is underway. Their findings will be turned over to the Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office for review following their investigation’s completion, which is standard protocol.
