Wrongfully convicted man released after 27 years in prison starts new job as paralegal (Photo)

Wrongly jailed Shabaka Shakur and wife Lanette Holmes have reason to smile – he has a new job.

A wrongfully convicted man who was released from prison last month after being locked up 27 years started work Tuesday at his new job as a paralegal, according to the Daily News.

“I’m very happy,” said Shabaka Shakur, on his first day of employment at the law office of Ron Kuby, who worked to get Shakur sprung from prison.

“I filed 13 motions on my own while I was incarcerated, I learned on my own through trial and error,” Shakur told The News after picking up a package from the Brooklyn district attorney’s conviction review unit.

Shakur’s double homicide conviction was overturned by a judge and the indictment was dismissed by Brooklyn prosecutors.

The 50-year-old man felt financially overwhelmed when returning to the city.

Another of his lawyers, Leah Busby, started a GoFundMe page, which has collected more than $2,800 from 63 donors in about two weeks.

“While in prison, he educated himself on the law and he cares deeply about helping others who are wrongfully imprisoned,” said Busby.

Kuby added, “Shakur has insight into those who are wrongfully convicted, he knows how to conduct these cases from the ground level.”

Shakur is one of eight people whose convictions were overturned because of the questionable tactics of disgraced former NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella.

“This is what I need to do, help others who are incarcerated and know they shouldn’t be,” said Shakur.

As a paralegal, Shakur will review files and trial transcripts whenever the firm receives a new potential case.
