Investigators are recommending that prosecutors file a vehicular manslaughter charge against Caitlyn Jenner for her role in the fatal Malibu, California, car crash that claimed the life of Kim Howe in February.
The I Am Cait star was driving at an unsafe speed when her Escalade hit Howe’s car on Feb. 7, said Det. Richard Curry of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, The Los Angeles Times reports.
Howe’s Lexus was pushed into oncoming traffic and she was killed when her car was struck head-on by a Hummer, according to the Associated Press.
Curry added that while Jenner was not driving above the speed limit, she was driving at “an unsafe speed” for the road conditions that day.
Investigators are also recommending that charges be brought against Jessica Steindorff, who was behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius involved in the crash and has filed a lawsuit against Jenner.
According to authorities, Steindorff’s Prius stopped or suddenly slowed down, causing Howe to hit her car. Jenner then hit Howe’s car in turn.
Cell phone records show that no one was using a device at the time of the crash, according to the Times.
The case against Jenner will be presented for final review next week. Ultimately, the district attorney will decide whether to press criminal charges.
If convicted of vehicular manslaughter, Jenner faces up to one year in county jail.
