A new study found that the app collects your phone number and details on the calls you make and stores them on WhatsApp’s computers.
In theory, this could put users at risk from hacker attacks.
The study, carried out by researchers from Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic is among the first to peek ‘under the bonnet’ of messaging services such as WhatsApp.
While the service DOES store your information on remote computers, it’s not easy to hack into, the researchers say.
To ‘listen in’, researchers created a tool which decrypted communications between an Anrdoid phone and WhatsApp’s servers.
Doing so isn’t easy, the researchers say, ‘as both access to data on the device as well as the full network traffic is needed.’
Our research demonstrates the type of data that can be gathered through the forensic study of WhatsApp and provides a path for others to conduct additional studies into the network forensics of messaging apps,’ the researchers write.
