A sadistic dentist who took pleasure in hurting his patients has been jailed for eight years.

Jacobus van Nierop, 51, deliberately mangled his patients’ mouths, earning him the nickname ‘the dentist of horror’.

The Dutch national went on trial in March for ripping out healthy teeth and leaving dozens of patients with injuries including broken jaws, recurrent abscesses and septicaemia in the small French town of Chateau-Chinon.

One elderly patient went in for braces and had eight healthy teeth removed unnecessarily, leaving her mouth ‘gushing with blood’ for days. She says Van Nierop, who refused her any pain relief after the operation, then fixed dentures on to her raw gums.

Another said he was left with ‘pieces of flesh hanging everywhere’ after Van Nierop tore out one of his teeth.

He frequently knocked patients out with injections and when they came round, they’d see only a Post-It note saying to come back for an appointment the following day.

The court in Nevers also banned him for life from practising as a dentist and fined him €10,500 (£8,135).

During the trial, prosecutor Lucile Jaillon-Bru said Van Nierop, who locals said tried to cut his throat when police came for him, had carried out ‘useless and painful procedures’ on about 100 patients with the aim of having them reimbursed by medical insurance schemes.

She said he took ‘pleasure at causing pain’ to his patients.
