Serena Williams carved out another slice of history last night when she overtook Roger Federer’s record of match wins at Grand Slams.
The World No 1 brushed aside Kazakhstan’s unseeded Yaroslava Schvedova 6-2, 6-3 to book a quarter final showdown with Simona Halep at the US Open.
The victory was her 308th at the four majors, breaking the record set by Federer, who is not competing at Flushing Meadows.
Williams said: “It’s really exciting. This is where it all started for me and it’s so magical to do it here.
“Hopefully Roger is going to keep playing and I know I am, so hopefully we can keep winning a few more.”
