Church of England appoints Nigerian first black bishop in 20 years

The Church of England has announced Nigeria’s Woyin Karowei Dorgu as the 13th bishop of Woolwich.

Dorgu, the Church’s first black bishop in 20 years, will be consecrated at Southwark Cathedral on 17 March, 2017.

 A statement from England’s Prime Minister Office said The Queen has approved the nomination of Dorgu to succeed the Right Reverend Michael Geoffrey Ipgrave.Fifty-eight-year-old Dorgu was born and brought up in Nigeria, where he trained as a doctor.

He studied at the London Bible College for his BA. He also studied for his ordination at Oak Hill Theological College from 1993 to 1995.

Dorgu who holds an MA in missiology is married to Mosun, a consultant child psychiatrist.
