No Leave No Transfer : Escaped Nigerian lion returns to zoo voluntarily

A lion, which escaped from its cage in Kano Zoological Garden about three days ago, returned to its cage on Monday, the Managing Director of the garden, Sai’du Gwarzo, has confirmed.

Earlier, when the lion, valued at over N7m escaped, it was said to have forced its way into a cage where goats were kept and consumed all the goats.

Worried by the danger posed by the lion to Kano residents, it was reported that the state Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, gave a directive for the lion to be shot on sight.

According to Gwarzo, a team from the Kano garden made unsuccessful efforts to tranquilise and capture the lion; the management decided to seek help from the Abuja National Park experts.

It was however learnt that on arrival late Sunday evening, the experts were said to have swung into action but suspended the search at nightfall.

It was also gathered that while the experts were preparing to resume search on Monday morning, the lion voluntarily returned to its cage

Gwarzo said, ‘’The lion must have returned in the dark when experts from Abuja National Park suspended their search.

‘’When the Abuja experts and the local workers assembled on Monday morning to resume search for the escaped lion, to their surprise, it was found loitering around its cage, then we successfully lured it into its cage.’’
