Afrobeat singer Tiwa Savage has recounted asking music executive Don Jazzy to sign her to Mavin Records after he launched the label.
Tiwa, in an interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, revealed that she had approached him multiple times, and he eventually agreed.
Reflecting on her experience, Savage noted that being with a record label often means they prioritise business over personal issues, contrasting it with the familial bond she feels with her Mavin colleagues.
Tiwa Savage said: “So when Don Jazzy started Mavin, I went to him and I said can you sign me now? Because you didn’t sign me in Mo’Hits before. And now you’ve started Mavin. And he was just like, you know what? I don’t have a first lady.
“I asked again. Yes. Wow. Oh, my God. I don’t have shame. Yeah, you really, you really asked everyone. Yeah, I did. And I went to Jazzy and I asked him again. And then he just said, yes, like that.
“Like, yeah, your time, your time at Mavin. What did you learn from it as an artist and as a businesswoman? Who you sign to is very important. Like, I didn’t appreciate it until after I left.
