Amy Winehouse’s Ex-Husband Denies He’s Responsible For Her Death

Blake Fielder-Civil, the actor who was married to Amy Winehouse from 2007 to 2009—reacted to public speculation that he is fully to blame for her untimely death in 2011 at age 27.

“My stance now is that I know a lot of people, especially people reading media 20 years ago, would have an idea that Amy’s passing is my responsibility,” Blake said on the March 17 episode of the We Need to Talk podcast. “As I’ve always said, I never shirk from any responsibility. If I’ve done something, I’ll put my hand up to it.”

Despite confessing that he was with Amy the first time she used heroin, Blake said that she had “started trying cocaine” before then with a different ex.

“I never blamed a person that gave me drugs for the first time,” he added. “I never understood, do these people think that I forced Amy to do drugs? That’s just not what happened.”

“Amy herself had agency,” the 43-year-old continued. “And that is in no way at all disrespecting her by saying that, but Amy did what she wanted to do. And even though the drinking had started to hurt her, she carried on.”

While Blake doesn’t accept total responsibility, he admitted that he has “made peace” with the reality that he “had a part to play” in Amy’s death, which was the result of accidental alcohol poisoning, with the coroner noting there were no illegal substances found in her system.

“I’m not shirking responsibility,” he added, “but this idea of daily facilitating, no. I wasn’t the dealer.”

In the end, Blake—who was incarcerated at the time of Amy’s death—still feels connected to his late ex-wife.

“I’m never, ever here to say, ‘Amy was bad,’” he shared. “But I know Amy wouldn’t want me to still be sat here 20 years later saying it was all my fault. She’d be saying, ‘Get it right, babe. Come on. Tell them the truth.’”

“We were just young addicts at the time. We weren’t to start with, then we were, and it could happen to anyone,” Blake said. “Our love had nothing to do with addiction and addiction had nothing to do with our love. That’s where it went. It wasn’t who we were.”
