There was pandemonium yesterday within Lagos and Ogun states as rumours of purported Boko Haram invasion spread across the two states.
Security operatives were placed on red alert while members of the public were unsettled as motorists plying the Ogun and Lagos axis halted their journeys for fear of running into the insurgents.
We gathered that trouble started in the morning when a truck, loaded with wheat fell near Ogere in Ogun State along the Lagos-Ibadan Express road as some street urchins popularly called ‘Area boys’ attempted to loot the commodity, forcing the driver of the truck to make a distress call to the Police, who stormed the scene.
The ‘Area boys’ resisted Police intervention, forcing the cops to open fire while the hoodlums ran for cover.
Majority of the hoodlums were said to have run into the bush and in an attempt to make arrest, police personnel started combing the bush. A police source said some passersby, who saw them combing the bush peddled the rumour that the Police might be searching for Boko Haram members. That marked the beginning of the rumour which sent jitters across the three states of Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states.
But in a swift reaction, security operatives in Lagos dispelled the rumour of alleged presence of suspected members of Boko Haram on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
They admitted they were quite on their toes when they heard the rumour and had drafted their men to the scene where the criminals were said to have been sighted.
Assistant Director, Public Relations of 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lt-Col Omale Ochaguba told Daily Sun on phone that the Army authorities had never acted on rumour, but urged members of the public to always provide the organisation with useful information.
Although, he admitted that the Army authorities in charge of 81 Division has tightened security along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, he added that the mass deployment was done soon after the Abuja bomb blast.
“We treat every information with the urgency it deserves. We do not see any information as rumour. We urge members of the public to avail security personnel with useful information. However, the Nigerian Army had since beefed up security after the recent Abuja bomb blast. You can see the presence of our men all over, this is as a result of the directive issued by the Nigerian Army authorities to all divisions,” he added.
Addressing journalists at his office on the alleged insurgent threat, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko also dispelled the information as mere rumour. Giving insight of what transpired, he explained that the incident involved some hoodlums, who attempted to attack a truck which spilled its content along the Lagos Ibadan expressway.
