Dr. Sheik Umar Khan, the Sierra Leonean doctor hailed as a “national hero” for treating more than one hundred Ebola patients, died yesterday of the same disease.

According to Sierra Leone’s Chief Medical Officer Brima Kargbo, Sierra Leone has lost its only viral haemorrhagic specialist in the face of this epidemic. The doctor was diagnosed with the virus last week. He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients.

Before his diagnosis, Dr Khan told reporters: “I am afraid for my life, I must say, because I cherish my life.”

“Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by disease. Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk,” he added.

3 nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan also died from the disease last week.
