Woman gives birth to twins despite being genetically born a man (Photos)

A woman has been able to give birth to twins despite told she was technically a man and had neither ovaries nor Fallopian tubes.

Throughout her teenage years, Hayley Haynes had never a period and aged 19 she was told by doctors she would never conceive due to a rare condition called androgen insensitivity syndrome.

But with the help of IVF and doctors growing a womb inside her, she has finally been able to give birth to twin babies called Avery and Darcey.

The 28-year-old told the Daily Mirror: ‘When they told me I had no womb, I was so confused I felt sick, my biggest fear was never having children

‘Suddenly a huge piece of my life was missing, I felt like half a woman and was embarrassed.

‘How I was going to tell a guy I was genetically male when I started dating?’

In 2007 doctors were able to find a minuscule womb, not picked up in previous scans.

As a result IVF became an option for Ms Haynes and her husband, Sam, with her womb being encouraged to grow through hormone treatment.

In 2011, after her womb was declared ready for IVF, the couple were left distraught when the NHS would not fund it.

The determined couple would not be discouraged and raised £10,500 for the expensive treatment and flights to the clinic in Cyprus.

They were told she had a 60 per cent chance of getting pregnant using an egg donor.

Ms Haynes spoke of her worries about the IVF treatment: ‘I was so nervous. We only had one shot and couldn’t afford to go through it all again

‘I desperately wanted to be a mother and knew if there were no viable eggs or the implantation wasn’t successful, I’d be distraught.’

Happily for all concerned, nine years after she was told she would never conceive, she gave birth to twins Avery and Darcey.

She said: ‘Becoming a mother was the single most amazing moment of my life.

‘When I held the babies in my arms for the first time, I was overwhelmed.’
