A woman born at the side of the road has kept up the family tradition after giving birth herself on the way to hospital.

Kate Wilshire arrived in a hurry in 1986 when her mum Sharon pulled over as she drove to a maternity unit in Bristol.

Almost 30 years later, she has now done the same thing with daughter Hetty being born as husband Aaron rushed her to hospital.

The couple rang midwives when the baby began to emerge and were guided through the birth as they drove with their phone on hands-free mode.

By the time they pulled up at St. Michael’s Hospital in Bristol in their Toyota Corolla Hetty – Kate’s third child – had fully appeared.

She weighed 7lb 8oz, and and was rushed into the maternity ward for a check-over.

Kate, 29, from Whitchurch, Bristol, said: “It is amazing that the same thing has happened to me too.

“Many people have joked that we’ve started a family tradition, but we rather hope that any grandchildren we may have in the future arrive in a rather less eventful fashion.”
