Women with tattoos have higher self esteem, study finds

Women with tattoos have higher self-esteem than their tattoo-free counterparts.

That’s according to a new study by Texas Tech University researchers, who set out to see if there was a correlation between tattoos and well-being.

The number of tattoos a person had was compared to levels of self-esteem, depression and suicidal tendencies.

Women with four or more tattoos, the study concluded, had ‘substantively and significantly higher levels of self-esteem’ than those with fewer or no tattoos.

The study also found that those same women were four times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past.

The research team, led by Dr Jerome Koch, speculated that perhaps getting a tattoo could be an attempt to reclaim a sense of self.

Importantly, the study does not suggest there is any correlation between people who get tattoos and subsequently attempt suicide.
