Health Zone: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death globally now, read some noticeable symptoms


Diabetes is a common life-long health condition, with over 422 million people suffering from it across the world. One of the symptoms of the disease is constant and unrelenting itching around the penis and the vagina.

In fact, the disease is said to be one of the leading causes of death globally now.

Early diagnosis and intervention are the starting points for living well if you are diagnosed with the disease.

Diabetes is an important cause of blindness, amputation and kidney failure.

According to the latest figure from the World Health Organisation, as at 2015, there were more than 1.56 million cases of diabetes in Nigeria. And number of patients have continued to grow!

According to diabetologist, Dr. Isiavwe Afokoghene, people should be aware that the signs and symptoms of diabetes are not always obvious and the condition is often diagnosed during medical check ups.

However, some noticeable symptoms of diabetes include…

  • Urinating more than usual, particularly at night.
  • Tiredness could also be an indicator a person is suffering from diabetes.
  • Feeling thirsty and needing to drink more water can be a symptom of type 1 and 2 diabetes.
  • Some people also find they lose weight very quickly, without really knowing why.
  • Itching around the penis and vagina is also a symptom of diabetes, but it is important to get this checked with a doctor.
  • Frequent episodes of the infection thrush can also be an indicator for the conditions, which needs to be treated as soon as possible.
  • Experts have also said if cuts and wounds are healing slowly, it could be a symptom of diabetes.
  • People suffering with blurred vision might also be suffering with diabetes, which is caused by the lens of the eye becoming dry.

The bottom line: If you notice any or a combination of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to see the doctor!
