In Nigeria, Immigration boss urges officers to respect passport applicants

The Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr. Mohammed Babandede, has urged officers to treat passport applicants with utmost respect.

Babandede, who said this during his visit to the Cross River State Command of the NIS, also rated the Calabar passport office as the best in Nigeria in terms of service delivery.

He said service delivery in terms of passport issuance had improved tremendously in the country, adding that this was already complementing the reforms at the airports.

He said, “We have done a lot of reforms at the airports in terms of service delivery. We receive visitors everyday at the airports and borders; so, your relationship with members of the public should be made clear. You are not doing this for yourselves but for our country, Nigeria.

“The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council has chosen the NIS as the number one reform agency in Nigeria. This was attained due to dedication of officers and men of the service. So, you should not let us go down. Handle the issue of passport issuance with care and treat applicants with utmost respect.”

Babandede’s position on the rating of the Calabar passport office as being the best in the country was reinforced by the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, who described the state command as the most reformed.

He said that the teams that were sent to the Alausa, Festac and Ikoyi passport offices to clear backlog of passport applications discovered that officers were in the habit of causing unnecessary delays, adding that such misconduct would no longer be tolerated.

Babandede promised special promotion to diligent and non-compromising passport control officers.
