As Zamfara beckons on history : Where is John Odigie Oyegun, not John the Baptist, of Nigeria? – By Okechukwu Nwafor

Few months to the 2015 presidential election, there was high level of insecurity in the country, including a bomb blast targeted at Buhari himself, with more than 70 persons dead. APC chieftains and their supporters upped the blame game. They accused President Jonathan of being unable to contain the incessant Boko Haram attacks and the high level of insecurity. That prompted my article that was published in the Guardian Newspaper on September 7, 2014. The article, titled, “John Odigie Oyegun and the Politics of blame,” argued that APC was playing the politics of blame whereby Jonathan’s culpability was needlessly insinuated while his innocence was literally constructed as non-existent.

Jonathan was believed to have masterminded the bombing of APC presidential candidate, Buhari, on July 23, 2014. According to Oyegun then, “the bomb blast will not be treated as one of the usual Boko Haram atrocities as there seems to be more to it than meets the eye.” Oyegun, the choir master, and his APC choristers promised to end Boko Haram within few months of their emergence. My people the summary lies in the following Igbo sayings: ‘you don’t catch the kite by sitting on the floor,’ ‘The road to the ghost land is very short, but cannot be seen by the shortsighted,’ ‘You argue that it is easy to assist ‘danda’ carry the earth on its head but the problem is where you can grab the earth to place it on danda’s head?’ ‘Glowing fire flame looks charming but who will volunteer to fetch it with bare hands?’ John do you understand Igbo proverbs? Where is Chike Okoye? Come and Igbonize these proverbs to make them sweeter.

John the Baptist of the Bible appeared in the wilderness of Judea preaching baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. John Odigie Oyegun of Nigeria appeared in the wilderness of Jonathan preaching baptism of fire for PDP supporters during the time of bomb blast and insecurity. He never appeared during this time of Buhari when everyone, including PDP and APC people, have been initiated into the cult of mayhem using baptism of fire. John of Nigeria where are you?

John the Baptist in the Bible, it was reported, lived major part of his life in the obscurity of the Judean desert before the word of God appeared to him occasioning his prophetic ministry when he was about thirty years old (Luke 3:2). He then suddenly appeared preaching of this baptism of repentance. John of Nigeria was the opposite. He suddenly appeared during the time of Jonathan to vocalize the obvious pandemonium that befell the nation and call for the baptism of fire on PDP members. He went into obscurity when everyone, perhaps including himself, has been dragged into the river of blood for baptism of fire.

John the Baptist in the Bible came to announce the arrival of our savior Jesus Christ, while John of Nigeria came, few months before the 2015 election, to announce the slayer of the throat of the nation. John the Baptist in the Bible was the forerunner of Messiah. John of Nigeria was the forerunner of our exterminator.

John where are you? Is your voice strangled by the shrill groan of blood in Zamfara? Is your voice muffled by the oozing sounds of rat-a-rat in Sambisa? John you are not a good man. So you came to announce the baptism of fire in Zamfara and Sambisa. You came to announce the baptism of fire for love, amity, equity, peace, national cohesion, name them. You came to announce the baptism of fire for the defenseless pigeons of Shia and IPOB seeking to be freed from a cage of fiefdom and serfdom.

Mind you, very soon freedom shall shake that your leprous hand which you always stretch out to frighten impeccable morality. Freedom shall not only grab those leprous hands but will squeeze them and break them to pieces. By then your obscured voice shall find its way inside the pain of cruelty you heralded its coming. Next time you will know that you don’t bring down the ‘ngiga’ by sitting on the bare floor. Chike Okoye do the needful for non-Igbo readers.
