The Chief Investment Officer at Ovid Investment Capital, United Kingdom, Mr Ekos Akponkabeyen, has called on the Federal Government to declare state of emergency in states with high level of unemployment, insecurity and killings.
Akponkabeyen who made the call on Friday at a press conference to mark a presentation of his new book titled, ‘The African Progress Initiative’, in Lagos noted that no nation would stand aloof and watch the deliberate killings of her citizens.”
He called on the citizens to mount pressure on the government and security agencies to create the desired changes needed to halt killings.
He said, “It is no doubt that Nigerians are facing a compound problem. The recent attacks, kidnapping, killings, armed robbery, among others, have gone on for too long and the situation has not been given the desired approach. It is highly unacceptable to resort to killing our fellow human beings.
“The Federal Government is saddled with the task of maintaining security in the state. I called on Nigerians to put more pressure on how policing and security is done without fear or favour for a better nation; if the security agencies aren’t able to bring about the best security for this country, then the government should declare a state of emergency in those places of killings as a temporal measure while developing strategies to fully eliminate it because the lives of people is more important than anything and should not just go in a blink of an eye. Nigerians lives cannot be that cheap,” the investment expert said.
He also advised the Federal Government to focus more on growing the economy as a way of creating employment and to end the fight for resources which he noted gave rise to kidnapping and killings in the country.
