Mugabe betrayed his people’s hopes – US

The United States on Friday blamed Robert Mugabe for impoverishing Zimbabwe and said he “betrayed his people’s hopes” as the guerrilla turned strongman died at the age of 95.

“Robert Mugabe helped liberate Zimbabwe, but his human rights abuses and gross economic mismanagement impoverished millions and betrayed his people’s hopes for their nation,” State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

He indeed betrayed his people. The first time I agreed with this man. He was one of many African leaders who would commit any atrocity to remain in power. Yes, he stood up to the British colonial rulers, but accomplished nothing. Zimbabwe is one of the world’s poorest countries resulting from his dictatorship. He will not be missed.
