Prolonged labour may cause epilepsy in babies – Neurologist

A Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Prof. Ikeoluwa Lagunju, has blamed home deliveries, prolonged labour in the absence of skilled medical personnel and injury at birth for some of the causes of epilepsy in babies.

Lagunju, who said infections could also cause the condition in babies and said injuries to the brain through accidents or other means cause the condition in adults.

She said this in an interview with Punch correspondent on the sidelines of the Agbeke clinic week 2020, an event organised in memory of Mrs. Sherifat Kola-Daisi.

The consultant said with adequate care for children with neurological and mental disabilities, they could become useful members of society.

She said, “About 50 million people are living with epilepsy worldwide and the majority of them are in the developing countries – two-thirds of them are children. Epilepsy arises for no apparent reasons at times but genetic reason.

“In Nigeria, up to 40 per cent of children with epilepsy have it because their brains have suffered some sorts of damage around the time of delivery. Babies are delivered at home and it has been reported that only about a third of pregnant women are delivered of their babies by skilled hands.

“It can also be caused when pregnant women have difficult deliveries when they deliver at home, this leads to damage to their babies’ brains.

“Infections cause epilepsy also but the government has introduced vaccines that protect against some of these infections. Another challenge is that some mothers don’t take their babies to immunisation centres.

The Chief Executive Officer of Star Children Initiative, Mrs Grace Abimbola, said the government and parents needed to pay special attention to children living with mental disabilities.

She said by doing this, such children could be made to become productive members of society thereby reducing begging and total dependence on others.
