A terminally ill woman in America has gone public to explain why she has decided to end her own life.
Brittany Maynard has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and has moved to a different state so that she can legally ‘die with dignity’ and has decided the day that her life will end.
Brittany was a newly wed when she started getting severe headaches, earlier this year she found out she had a huge glioblastoma brain tumor, doctors have told her she has around 6-months left to live.
With her family she has made the decision to take the drugs that she has been issued two days after her husband’s birthday later this month. She told People magazine: “I really wanted to celebrate my husband’s birthday, which is October 30,” she says. “I’m getting sicker, dealing with more pain and seizures and difficulties so I just selected it.”
Brittany and her family moved from their San Francisco Bay Area home to Oregon where she would be able to legally have help in ending her life.
Only five states in the USA allow dignity in dying, where a patient who meets certain criteria can be prescribed drugs to end their life.
