Society for Family Health asks Nigerian rich pastors to fund HIV treatment

The Society for Family Health has called on wealthy pastors who own private jets to assist in funding HIV/AIDS treatment as donations from foreign countries and organisations have dropped.

The Managing Director of the SFH, Bright Ekweremadu, said this at the 2017 World AIDS Day organised by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ekweremadu said since Nigeria had the second highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world and the government’s budget could not tackle the menace, it had become necessary to engage the private sector and wealthy churches.

He said, “I read in a newspaper sometimes this week about a pastor who received a jet plane gift from his congregation and I do know that one of the leprosy colonies in Nigeria was built by a church in Uzuakoli (Abia State).

“Shouldn’t we also begin to negotiate with our churches to begin to put some of the money they are making into taking care of the health of people? Again that will go into some financing integration.”

In his remarks, the Director General of NACA, Dr. Sani Aliyu, said since the first case of HIV was reported in Nigeria in 1986, about 1.5 million deaths and over five million new HIV infections had been averted.

He said over 3.2 million people in Nigeria were living with HIV/AIDS but only one million people were on treatment.

The NACA boss revealed that it costs N50,000 a year to treat one person living with HIV which translates to N50bn for the one million people on treatment, a cost which he said could not be undertaken by the government alone.
