From Next Level to Burning of Billboard By Okechukwu Nwafor

This image is not from any other place than the Nigerian President’s home state, Katsina. The president’s own kinsmen are burning his billboard. The billboard reads in Hausa, ““The faces of fairness and champions of the masses.” However, the masses are chanting a different slogan: “the president is a failure.” This is a clash between political slogan and existential fact.

This is a phenomenal showdown, the fight between fiction and reality. The confrontation between propaganda and social honesty, between lie and truth. Above all, it is a historic duel between self-deceit and self-liberation. This is a moment when the denial and the consent of Nigeria’s obvious predicament accepted the ultimate verdict of truth.

Bandits have taken over their entire state, the president’s own state, and the president is visibly absent. The people are susceptible, defenseless, utterly incapacitated and hopeless.

This is not about opposition politics; it is about the reality on the ground. Northern Nigeria is now a killing field. Indeed, the rest of Nigeria is now a killing field. No one is in doubt about the level of insecurity in Nigeria. It is unarguably higher now than in previous administration.

It is a stark reality. When you vote leaders out of ethnic, religious and clannish sentiments then you must happily embrace the result of your actions. That is the meaning of accountability. I hope the situation gets better.
